Movies in a Minute: "The Little Mermaid"

Despite the excellent work of Halle Bailey as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula in the live action version of "The Little Mermaid," Sioux City Journal film critic Bruce Miller says the movie is just another attempt to squeeze money out of a property that didn't need remaking.

Fans of the animated “Mermaid” may be eager to see what director Rob Marshall has done. His take is interesting, not revolutionary. The original, in fact, is more fun and moving.
The new live-action version of “The Little Mermaid” is so stuffed with extraneous characters, lavish orchestrations and special effects, you wonder if there’s room to move. Too many fish in the sea, you might say.
Each night after her show, musical theater hopefuls greet Bonnie Milligan at the Booth Theater stage door, eager to learn how she did it. “What’s your advice?” they ask. “And I say, ‘Every path looks different. There’s no correct way to do this.'”
