The stakes were unprecedented in UA football history: ASU, 10-0, and Arizona, 9-1, would play for a Fiesta Bowl berth. The Sun Devils completed a forever-controversial 8-yard touchdown pass to John Jefferson with 30 seconds in the first half. Arizona led 14-3. Jeffersonโ€™s catch, which appeared to be out of the back of the end zone, was the margin of victory, 24-21. Arizona, 9-2, put the then-best season in school history in the books, with no bowl game and nothing but regret.ย
