CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A proposed state law would stop employers from asking potential hires about their criminal histories on job applications.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that a group of lawmakers have filed the bill that would add the restriction to Wyoming's discriminatory and unfair employment practices.

Lead sponsor Rep. James Byrd, D-Cheyenne, says the bill would make it easier for people while past legal problems to move forward with their lives.

Employers would still be able to ask applicants about their criminal histories during interviews and run background checks on potential hires.

The proposed law would not apply to jobs where a criminal conviction automatically disqualifies the applicant form the position.

The proposal will be considered when the 2016 session begins in February.
