HEBER, Ariz. β€” Firefighters have cleared a line around a fire that has burned nearly a square mile of grass, brush and timber in a part of eastern Arizona burned by a massive wildfire in 2002.

Strong winds and dry conditions helped the fire grow after it started in a wash area four miles east of Heber.

Firefighters on Monday used a bulldozer and burning operations to build a line around the fire and containment as of midday Tuesday was about 30 percent.

The Forest Service said the fire's cause is under investigation but the Navajo County Sheriff's Office says it was started by target shooting.

The Rodeo-Chediski fire burned 730 square miles and was the largest fire in Arizona history until it was surpassed by a 2011 fire.
