CLEVELAND — The U.S. Department of Defense says the missing remains of a World War II fighter pilot from Cleveland have been recovered and will be buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery this week.
The agency says 2nd Lt. John W. Herb's body was missing since he was shot down while piloting a P-51D Mustang over Germany on April 13, 1945. His plane was seen crash landing in a field. He was 22.
In June 2014, a Defense Department team interviewed local residents in the vicinity of Gudow, Germany, and were led to where Herb was believed to be buried. The team excavated the suspected site, recovering remains and aircraft wreckage.
Herb's remains were positively identified using dental records.
The burial at Arlington is scheduled for Thursday.
