PASCO, Wash. β€” The Benton-Franklin Health District is warning people to secure access points to their septic tanks after a 3-year-old fell into one.

The Tri-City Herald reports that a Franklin County boy fell into a newly built septic tank last week but was not seriously injured.

Health District Environmental Health Supervisor Rick Dawson says the district approved the new tank, but it is up to the construction company to ensure lids are secured.

The boy was covered in sewage, but otherwise unharmed which is not always the case. A 2-year-old boy in Skagit County died last year after falling into a tank and a 3-year-old in Franklin County suffocated in 2004 after falling into a tank near Basin City.
