A school resource officer at Elkhorn South High School has been placed on paid administrative leave and is the subject of a criminal investigation after allegations of “inappropriate conduct” with a student.

According to statements from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Elkhorn Public Schools, authorities were made aware of allegations against the officer, who is employed by the Sheriff’s Office, on Friday afternoon. School administrators immediately contacted Child Protective Services and the Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy was removed from duty at the school on Friday and placed on “administrative assignment,” or desk duty. On Wednesday, he was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Because the alleged conduct occurred outside Omaha city limits, the Sheriff’s Office’s criminal investigations bureau is conducting the investigation.

Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson said that the Douglas County Attorney’s Office has received a preliminary briefing and that the Sheriff’s Office expects to complete the investigation and present the full facts to the County Attorney’s Office in the coming days. The Attorney’s Office will then decide which charges are appropriate, if any.
