Sahuaro 14, Cienega 10

Sahuaro's winless streak against Cienega finally ended Friday night.

The Cougars came into the game having gone 0-11 against Cienega all time, but Sahuaro stopped the skid with a 14-10 win Friday night.

During the first quarter Sahuaro (3-3) was close to scoring after three pass interference penalties were called against Cienega. But the Cougars couldn't break the scoreless tie, and the teams ended the first quarter tied at 0-0.

During the second quarter, Cienega's Aaron Sauls ran for a touchdown from 5 yards out and Jacob Hackett kicked the extra point to give the Bobcats a 7-0 lead.

After not scoring in the first half, the Cougars put up 14 points in the third quarter. Justin Barnett flipped his way into the end zone on a 8-yard run, and then Alec Valenzuela scored on a 7-yard run to put the Cougars ahead 14-7.

“We made adjustments in the offensive line and defensive line,” said Sahuaro coach Scott McKee. “Just proud of our kids, they were able to end the streak.”

Cienega (1-5) was not giving up the battle just yet, kicking a field goal in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 14-10. But the Bobcats wouldn't score again.

“The team came out and executed," Valenzuela said. "We prepared really hard for this game, we needed the “W”. Our boys fought at the end and we came out on top.

Valenzuela had 111 rushing yards in the win and now has 282 for the season.

Sahuaro is set to play Tucson High next Friday and McKee says that the Cougars need to continue to improve because Tucson has “explosive team with great athletes”.
