A 9-year-old died Friday after a large metal gate at an elementary school in Tucson fell on the child, the sheriff’s department says.
Deputies were called to Centennial Elementary School, 2200 W. Wetmore Road, at about 2:20 p.m. Friday for a reported injury to a juvenile.
The child had severe traumatic injuries, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
“Life-saving measures were administered until Northwest Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and took over.” The child was taken to a hospital and died.
“The initial investigation revealed that the juvenile was helping close a large metal gate when the gate disconnected from its support, falling on the juvenile,” the Sheriff’s Department said.
The school is in Flowing Wells Unified School District.
