Chicanos Por La Causa has leased space at Oracle and Prince roads to open a high school with a strong vocational component.
The organization leased 8,515 square feet from Volk Co. in the former Carrington College building. The building’s total square footage is 49,000, said Kevin Volk.
He said the school will be on the Prince Road side of the building and that the Oracle Road frontage is still available.
“We’re excited about them opening a community school,” Volk said.
CPLC plans to open Envision High School Aug. 21, said Magdalena Verdugo, vice president of community schools. The school will serve up to 75 students, grades 9 through 12 and offer free breakfast and lunch and transportation vouchers for qualifying students, Verdugo said.
“We wanted to go somewhere where we felt we could serve the community,” she said.
CPLC’s first Tucson location was in the same 85705 Zip Code, so the move “feels like a homecoming.”
The area, served by Amphi and Flowing Wells high schools, has a large immigrant population and a high level of renters, Verdugo said.
With the social services provided by CPLC, students at the new high school can help their families with resources, she said.
“We’ve got to take care of the whole student,” Verdugo said.
The curriculum will also feature culinary arts, trade jobs and vocational education.
CPLC has a second high school at 251 W. Irvington Road. Visit cplccommunityschools.org for more information.
