Southwest Gas customers will see slightly higher bills this month

Customers of Southwest Gas will see a bill increase of about 40 cents a month for the typical home user, under a rate increase approved this week by the Arizona Corporation Commission.

Southwest Gas initially asked for a $31.9 million increase in overall revenue, but under a settlement agreement, the commission cut the revenue increase to $16 million.

The average residential customers’ bill will increase 1.09 percent, or about 40 cents monthly for average usage of 26 therms monthly, Southwest Gas spokeswoman Sonya Headen said. The rates become effective this month, she said.

The rate decision included a condition, proposed by Commissioner Andy Tobin, that requires Southwest Gas to study the feasibility of adopting an automatic-enrollment process to enroll more customers in the Low Income Ratepayer Assistance Program.

Las Vegas-based Southwest Gas serves 1.9 million customers in Arizona, California and Nevada.
