On Wednesday, Walmart marked the completion of a multimillion-dollar capital renovation and expansion of its Supercenter at 7150 E. Speedway with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, ahead of grand-opening celebrations this weekend.

Walmart added 66,000 square feet to the store, boosting its footprint to about 192,000 square feet, and added a greater assortment of fresh produce and other groceries and a new Burger King eating area.

The Speedway store, which features a full pharmacy and vision center, has been open since 1989, Walmart store manager James Grow said.

Eighty jobs were added as part of the store expansion and renovation, bringing the total store workforce to 400 full- and part-time employees. The average full-time, hourly Walmart worker now makes $13.20 an hour in Arizona.

Walmart will have a welcome celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, featuring family activities and free food samples while supplies last.
