Tucsonโs Banner-University Medical Center is the third-best hospital in Arizona, according to the newly released 27th annual U.S. News & World Report โBest Hospitalโ list.
The Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix ranked first and second respectively in the magazineโs annual ranking, which is primarily based on outcomes and reputation among specialists.
Banner-University Medical Center Tucson also earned national rankings in two specialties โ geriatrics (46th) and nephrology (39th) โ and achieved a โhigh performingโ rating in cancer, gastroenterology/GI surgery, neurology/neurosurgery, orthopaedics and pulmonology.
The local Banner hospital was the only Tucson hospital in the ratings to achieve a national ranking in any specialty, though other local hospitals achieved โhigh performing ratings.โ
Other local hospitals with high performing ratings include Carondelet St. Josephโs Hospital (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure), Carondelet St. Maryโs Hospital (heart failure), Northwest Medical Center (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, hip replacement), Oro Valley Hospital (hip replacement), and Tucson Medical Center (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip replacement, knee replacement).
The magazine gave the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix a national ranking in 10 specialties โ cancer (26th), cardiology/heart surgery (40th), diabetes/endocrinology (50th), ear/nose/throat (28th), gastroenterology/GI surgery (8th), geriatrics (16th), nephrology (28th), neurology/neurosurgery (45th), orthopedics (46th) and pulmonology (30th).
Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix earned national rankings in two specialties โ geriatrics (32nd) and nephrology (35th).
The Mayo Clinic based in Rochester, Minnesota, led the honor roll of best 20 hospitals in the nation, followed by the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Consumers have a variety of patient safety and quality ratings to choose from when it comes to hospitals, including the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Two others recommended by local health experts and hospital officials are the federal governmentโs Hospital Compare and the twice-yearly Hospital Safety scores from The Leapfrog Group.
