Tucson Real Estate: New shop features traditional Indian garb, fashion

Desi Mall is open at 4652 E. Speedway, near Swan Road.
When Faiziah Rahman visited Tucson to enroll her son at the University of Arizona, the city grabbed her attention.
She was intrigued by how multicultural it is and the large, refugee population.
The seamstress of traditional Indian wardrobes did some research and surveys at area grocery stores and mosques and the response was very positive, Rahman said.
Recently, she moved to Tucson and leased 1,455 square feet at 4652 E. Speedway to open Desi Mall, which stocks dresses and suits from Nepal, Mumbai and Pakistan.
Since opening her shop, several customers have stopped in for the soft cotton tunics and pants that are traditionally topped off with a scarf.
“American women love the Indian cotton,” Rahman said. Anarkali dresses and Churidar pajamas are very popular.
Outfits range from simple to elaborate Punjabi dresses and Saree blouses with embroidery and beads. Rahman also carries fabric and tailors outfits.
Prices range from $140 to $300 for dresses, but are not fixed.
“I will always negotiate,” she said.
The shop is open Monday — Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday 2 — 7 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
On June 24, Rahman will host the Chaand Raat Mela celebration, held on the last day of Ramadan to spot the new moon, which signals the arrival of the Islamic month of Shawwal. The event will be held in the space adjacent to her store and the public is welcome.
