Tucson Fire Department hosted employees from the Banner-University Medical Center Level 1 Trauma center and Burn Program for a firefighter experience at Tucson Police Academy in Tucson, Ariz. on December 16th, 2019.
Employees were suited up as if they were firefighters with gear and oxygen tanks. They first learned how to handle a water hose. Then they went through a maze similar to what firefighters move through when in tight spaces. Then the employees used spreaders and cutters to force open car doors and were, also, fitted for oxygen masks. Then they rappelled down a 75ft tower and fought a fire inside a 260 degree burn room.
This is the first time TFD auctioned off this experience at the annual Tucson Firefighters Ball.

Dr. Bellal Joseph, chief of trauma for Banner-University Medical Center, shaves his beard in order to be fitted for an oxygen mask at Tucson Police Department Academy, 10,001 S. Wilmot Rd.,Tucson, Ariz. on December 16th, 2019. Dr. Joseph and another fellow employee had to shave their face because their facial hair prevented their mask from sealing properly. Firefighters are required to keep their face shaved due to safety reasons. Facial hair prevents the mask from sealing air tight which means firefighters will loose air faster.
