Six people died and 13 were injured by gunfire when a gunman opened fire outside the Safeway store at Ina and Oracle roads north of Tucson on Jan. 8, 2011.

Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was holding a "Congress On Your Corner" event on Tucson's northwest side when the attack occurred.

Those who died:

Christina-Taylor Green, 9; Dorothy "Dot" Morris, 76; John Roll, 63; Phyllis Schneck, 79; Dorwan Stoddard, 76; Gabriel "Gabe" Zimmerman, 30

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot point-blank in the head on Saturday at a northwest-side grocery store and remains hospitalized. Killed in the rampage were: Federal Judge John Roll; Gabe Zimmerman, Giffords' director of community outreach; Dorwan Stodder, a church volunteer; and a 9-year-old, Christina-Taylor Green.

The pistol used in the shooting rampage in which six people were killed and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was wounded malfunctioned, investigators said at a news conference today. Sheriff Clarence Dupnik also said three people prevented the attack from being worse.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was in surgery within 38 minutes of arriving at University Medical Center with a gunshot "devastating wound" to the head that required the removal of half her skull, doctors said at a news conference this morning.
