Back in 2009 when cello great Yo-Yo Ma made his long-awaited and much-anticipated debut with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, fans snagged up tickets months in advance.
By the time he took the stage on that early December night to perform DvorΓ‘kβs Cello Concerto in B minor, there wasnβt an empty seat to be found. In fact, they opened up the pit area and added a few chairs in the balcony to accomodate a dozen additional fans β going over the 2,289 that constitutes a full house.
Expect the same early sell-out for Maβs return to the orchestra for a special concert Dec. 5 under the baton of TSO Music Director JosΓ© Luis Gomez.
The program has not yet been announced, but, quite honestly, Ma could play 45 minutes of variations on βMary Had A Little Lambβ or Chopsticks and weβd sit at the ends of our seats looking on in childlike amazement.
Tickets ($60 to $150) are on sale now for 2017-18 season subscribers at the TSO Box Office, 2175 N. Sixth Ave.; limit one ticket per subscription. No single ticket on-sale date has been set.
