Arizona Friends of Chamber Music will open its upcoming season Wednesday with the Jerusalem String Quartet, which incorporates two violinists, a cellist and violist. The group is on an 11-concert tour of the United States and Canada.

The Jerusalem String Quartet will make its Tucson debut Wednesday night to open the 2011-12 Arizona Friends of Chamber Music season.

The young Israeli ensemble will perform Shostakovich's Sixth Quartet bookended by Beethoven's charming G-major Quartet and Brahms' Quartet in A minor. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Leo Rich Theater, 260 S. Church Ave. Tickets are $25, $10 for students at the theater or in advance at arizonachambermusic.org

The Jerusalem String Quartet is on an 11-concert North American tour that has been met with some pro-Palestinian protests, organized via social media by the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. Arizona Friends President Jean-Paul Bierny said there will be a couple of security guards on hand for the concert, although he doesn't anticipate any protests.

Five people peacefully protested the quartet's appearance Sunday in Vancouver, Canada, according to an email sent by their management David Rowe Artists.

In addition to Vancouver and Tucson, the quartet also will perform in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.
