St. Andrewβs Bach Society kicks off its summer series next weekend and if youβre jonesing for classical music, this is the biggest and pretty much only game in town.
The group, under the tireless hand of Benjamin Nisbet, gets started with βSummer Schubertiadeβ at 2 p.m. June 5.
In case the name didnβt fully explain it, the Schubertiade is an afternoon of Schubertβs greatest hits: Impromptu No. 3 in G flat from his Four Impromptus for piano; his wonderful Quintet in A major (βThe Troutβ) for violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano; and his βDeath and the Maidenβ String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, featuring soprano Erika Burkhart.
Nisbet is bringing along a cast of mostly fellow Tucson Symphony Orchestra colleagues led by Concertmaster Lauren Roth for the βTrout.β Ian Jones, Phil Alejo, Melissa Hamilton and Michael Dauphinais will share the stage with Roth.
Bach Society concerts are held at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2331 E. Adams St. Tickets are $12 adults, $6 students at standrewsbach.org
Also on tap in the series:
- βHappy Birthday Dorothy,β a celebration of arts patron Dorothy Dyer Vanek featuring True Concord Voices & Orchestra, June 26.
- βSunday With Bach,β celebrating the return of harpsichordist Guy Whatley, July 21.
- βMultiples of Bach,β a concert of double, triple and quadruple concertos by Bach.
