A dozen Arizona arts organizations have snagged a hefty $240,000 in grants, the National Endowment for the Arts announced today. Five of those hail from right here in the Old Pueblo, and are key to keeping Tucson’s hopping arts scene exciting. They are:

  • Arizona Theatre Company, $20,000, for its “Voices of the New Americans” program, geared toward developing works by Latinos, and engaging Latino audiences.
  • Borderlands Theater, $10,000, to support a production of “In Lak Ech,” a new play about the dismantling of Tucson Unified School District’s Mexican-American studies programs.
  • Kore Press, $10,000, to support the publication of works by women authors, an updated website, and for The Listening Project, audio recordings of female veterans’ stories.
  • Tucson Symphony Society, $20,000, for its Young Composers Project.
  • Tucson Pima Arts Council, $60,000, to support artists and art organizations in Southern Arizona who participate in a program designed to support cultural activities that help build a stronger, more cohesive, community. TPAC’s grant was the highest one awarded in Arizona.

  • West Valley Arts Council, Surprise, $10,000.
  • Childsplay, Tempe, $20,000.
  • Grand Canyon Chamber Music Festival, Grand Canyon, $25,000
  • City of Litchfield Park, $10,000
  • Arizona Opera, $20,000.
  • Heard Museum, Phoenix, $10,000.
  • Scottsdale Cultural Council, $25,000.
