Legendary UA bandleader Jack K. Lee was of a bygone era, when the simplicity of a wind ensemble or a wind symphony was just as powerful as a full marching band.

On Sunday, the University of Arizona Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony will honor the late UA fight-song composer with a memorial concert featuring Lee's music. Lee died in December at age 84.

The program will include Lee's beloved "Bear Down, Arizona."

"Jack Lee was a powerful force in the development of the UA bands and served as motivator, composer, teacher and friend to thousands of band alumni everywhere," Gregg Hanson, UA director of bands, said in a written statement.

The concert will feature "the UA bands performing a wide variety of music, from Shostakovich to Grofe and Jack's own compositions to John Philip Sousa. We honor Jack and hope to fill Centennial Hall for this event," Hanson's statement said.

Lee spent 33 years as UA band director, and his ensembles performed in more than 15 European countries.

Sunday's concert begins at 3 p.m. at the UA's Centennial Hall (Main Stages map, Page XX). Admission is free. 621-1162.
