Tucson's Dove of Peace celebrates Reformation's 500th with Mendelssohn

German composer Felix Mendelssohn penned his Symphony No. 5 “Reformation” in 1830 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Reformation.

This year, the world marks the Reformation’s 500th anniversary, and Dove of Peace Lutheran Church’s popular concert series is celebrating by tipping its bows to the music of Mendelssohn.

On Sunday, April 30, a half-dozen of Tucson’s finest professional musicians will perform an all-Mendelssohn concert that includes a pair of sonatas and his Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor. The concert is the season finale of the church’s popular free concert series.

Sunday’s concert comes later than usual for the series, which traditionally wraps up before Tucson’s winter visitors leave for cooler climes. But because of the musicians’ busy schedules, the concert was pushed back, said Eric Holtan, Dove of Peace’s music director who curates the series.
