No noodling: Just fully orchestrated works
Tucson guitartist/composer and go-to-Led Zeppelin expert Pete Fine sits down to compose and quickly finds himself poring over a fully fleshed-out work.
“I will get what I can only describe as ‘taken over’ (the word ‘possessed’ is a bit creepy...),” he said in an email announcing a concert Saturday at downtown’s Solar Culture Gallery of his “Concertos for Electric Guitar.” “Not only does music, melody, harmonies come to me faster than I can write it down, but usually fully orchestrated, as if I’m listening to a concert!”
This is what Fine had to say in the email about his composing:
“In the past year I had three full, four-movement symphonies occur like this — staying up way too late, getting it all into the notation software. My Second Concerto, which I’ll be performing Saturday, is another one of those works. ... One night I had an idea for a guitar part and voilà! (not to be confused with ‘viola’ :) :) Music just started coming through ... pretty soon it was 40 minutes long. Anyway, I then had to learn it :) :).”
So what does his electric guitar concerto sound like? “It’s a very melodic work, very ‘classical’ (mid to late 1800’s?).”
Fine will get a little musical backing by his Tucson Virtual Philharmonic Orchestra — aka computer program — when he performs the piece at 8 p.m. Saturday at Solar Culture, 31 E. Toole Ave. It’s an all-ages show and admission is $8 at the door. Details: Call 884-0874.
