Dancing in the Streets AZ receives award, sets performance Sunday

Dancing in the Streets AZ is on a bit of a high these days. And no wonder:

Sunday it presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” choreographed by  company founders Joseph Rodgers and Soleste Lupu.

And the pair has just been named Dance Teacher of the Year by Discount Dance Supply. The national teaching award, the first Discount Dance has given, comes with a tidy $2,500 prize.

Dancing in the Streets deserves all the accolades it gets — the 6-year-old organization provides dance education to at-risk children. And get this: no one is turned away from the school.

The abundance of joy and commitment the students display is infectious. You’ll see that if you catch “Midsummer” at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. Tickets are $8 and $10 at ditsaz.org, tix.com or Antigone Books, 411 N. 4th Ave.
