Thanksgiving traditions are unique to every family. Some play touch football in the yard before sitting down to eat while others prefer to eat early and then head straight to the movies.
Known to some Hollywood executives as "a huge family weekend," the days surrounding Thanksgiving kick off the lucrative holiday movie season. According to the New York Times, "every year film studios try to get their holiday movies — especially those aimed at family audiences — into theaters earlier and earlier." Just as christmas lights and music seem to pop out of nowhere the minute Halloween ends, movies similarly try to capitalize on captive holiday audiences as soon as they can.
With this in mind, PrettyFamous, an entertainment data site by Graphiq, identified the best movies that were released during the Thanksgiving holiday.
To determine which Thanksgiving releases top the rest, PrettyFamous first isolated movies released during the ten days prior to Thanksgiving and the three days that followed in a given year, starting in 1970. In order to qualify as a relatively well-received movie, the film needed to have at least 30,000 IMDb votes. The movies were then ranked according to their Smart Rating. This is a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie's Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer and Audience Score, IMDb rating, Metacritic Metascore, Gracenote rating and the cumulative inflation-adjusted box office gross. In the case of a tie, the film with the higher inflation-adjusted U.S. box office gross was favored.
Note: Descriptions for each movie are sourced (with minor edits) from Gracenote.
