Movie reviews: 'The Stand-In' is just a placeholder for something better

Movie critic Bruce Miller says "The Stand-In" is frequently cruel, sophomoric and overt. While it tries to send up actors who probably behave this way, it never goes deeper than a fall for its bigger laughs.
Movies in a Minute: 'The Stand-In'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says "The Stand-In" is frequently cruel, sophomoric and overt. While it tries to send up actors who probably behave this way, it never goes deeper than a fall for its bigger laughs. Drew Barrymore might have been able to make something of this, but she’s never really asked to do more than lowball one character and fist pump the other.
Movies in a Minute: 'Mank' & 'The Prom'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says "Mank" stands a good chance of being nominated for Best Picture. Director David Fincher films this in rich black and white and doesn’t skimp on the old Hollywood details. “The Prom,” is one of those exuberant musicals that doesn’t fully track, but makes you smile anyway. This film isn’t a sharp lesson about red and blue states, but an infectious musical that lets Meryl Streep show one more shade in her acting rainbow.
Movies in a Minute: 'The Croods: A New Age' & 'The Buddy Games'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says “The Croods: A New Age" is a visual CGI feast that makes the world pop. If you get to see it on a theater screen, you’ll realize how much time has been spent on its lush look, not its spartan script. "The Buddy Games," Miller says is cruder than “The Croods: A New Age.” Actor/director Josh Duhamel does a nice job framing his shots but, in the end, he’s just the leader of the pack, not another actor proving he has skills beyond the obvious. Because it doesn’t provide many truths – or laughs – “The Buddy Games” is one of those films you should be thankful you didn’t see. It’s crude, rude and totally under-brewed.
Movies in a Minute: 'Sound of Metal' & 'Hillbilly Elegy'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says "Sound of Metal" has plenty of riffs and flourishes that are driven by actor Riz Ahmed's expressive face. In "Hillbilly Elegy," Glenn Close and Amy Adams turn out star performances.
