Movies in a Minute: 'One Night in Miami'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says, "One Night in Miami" hits at the very heart of the Black movement in 1964. While moments of "Miami" seem claustrophobic, particularly when it stays in a cramped motel room, the film has enough sprawl to suggest much more. It's utterly believable because the film delves into each character's backstory.
Movies in a Minute: 'News of the World' & 'The Midnight Sky'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says the photography in "News of the World" is good; the plotting isn’t. "News of the World” isn’t earthshaking, just an opportunity for Tom Hanks to do a western. Also this week in “The Midnight Sky” George Clooney never seems to find a ray of hope. In the head-to-head competition, Hanks wins the battle over Clooney only because he doesn’t start out defeated. “The Midnight Sky” begins its assault right away and doesn’t stop hammering. Clooney gets one of those heart-tugging moments at the end – it’s a great payoff if you’ve made it that far.

But it’s Kristen Wiig as that needy Barbara who gets the biggest transformation. Also this week, Pixar's "Soul" may be a bit heavy for younger viewers but it’s the perfect picture for older people plagued by a pandemic. Touching and uplifting, “Soul” says plenty about what matters most. It hits us right in the middle of our hearts and pushes us to appreciate all that we have, not all that we wish for.
Movies in a Minute: 'Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” has an impact stretching far beyond the recording studio where it takes place. This impressive film accomplishes in 90 minutes what others can’t get done in three hours.
