The Old Soul Sisters aren't old, but their music is.
The dozen-voice a capella ensemble, with members in their 20s and 30s, specializes in traditional folk songs from around the world, including American spirituals, songs from Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.
The group's performances, though, aren't merely rehashes of those songs; they are rebirths. The Sisters bring an energy that infuses a fresh personality to songs that audiences might have taken for granted.
The 5-year-old ensemble — Gabrielle Pietrangelo, Melissa Callahan, Sarah Cotten, Debbie Daly, Diane Daly, Marie Hancock, Caroline Isaacs, Laura Kepner-Adney, Jessica Shuman, Norah Staples, Laura Talarsky-Stevens and Sereti Fifield Venzin — recorded an eponymous album in 2006. You can hear cuts of it on the group's MySpace page, www.myspace.com/ oldsoulsisters.
Or you can hear them perform 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4831 E. 22nd St. The Bramble Berrys, a world-folk-rock trio, will open the show.
Admission is $8 at the door, free for children 5 and younger. For more information, call 370-5195.
