Sister Solace presents specially arranged traditional American folk music Friday at Scoundrel & Scamp, 738 N. Fifth Ave., starting at 7:30 p.m.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, but Gabrielle Pietrangelo and Sister Solace think mom deserves more than a day.

So the unplugged folk ensemble is giving Friday, May 11, to moms, in addition to Sunday, May 13.

The group, numbering 13, will perform a Mother’s Day-themed concert of traditional American folk tunes, most of them arranged by Sister Solace’s founder and leader Pietrangelo. She said her arrangements breathe new life into old songs, infusing them with an indie country vibe.

“These are songs that people have grown up with in our country. They are old traditionals or they sound like old traditionals,” she said. “It’s music that honors our American roots, and there will be a lot of feminine energy.”

The concert includes guest musicians Beth Daunis on fiddle and Thoger Tetens Lund on stand-up bass; Pietrangelo will play guitar.

“Mother’s Day is important because if it wasn’t for mothers we wouldn’t be here,” Pietrangelo said. “I think of Mother’s Day also in relationship to Mother Earth.”

Friday’s concert at Scoundrel & Scamp, 738 N. Fifth Ave., starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door or in advance at eventbrite.com Details: sistersolace.com

Pietrangelo said she thinks she’s the only one of her ensemble who is not a mother. One of the members has a newborn, another is pregnant and the ensemble has a mother-daughter duo.
