José Luis Gomez

Nearly 1,300 Tucson area middle- and high-school musicians and vocalists were in the audiences of Tucson Symphony Orchestra concerts last season, recipients of the orchestra’s inaugural TEAMtix program.

That number apparently resonated with the orchestra and the Marshall Foundation, which provided funding for the program that gives free concert tickets to teens; the TSO then matches that free ticket so that the teen can bring a companion. The foundation and orchestra have committed to the TEAMtix program for three more years.

That means students in the Amphi, Ajo, Catalina Foothills, Marana, Oracle, Sahuarita, Sunnyside, Tucson Unified and Vail school districts who participate in choir, orchestra and other music programs are eligible for a free ticket to any TSO Classics or MasterWorks concerts throughout the 2017-18 season. The program also is open to youths participating in private and charter schools, Tucson Junior Strings, Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra, the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, the Tucson Girls Chorus and Music and Dance Academy students.

Here’s the 411 on participating:

  • Register for TEAMtix at tucsonsymphony.org and you might want to do it soon: the school with the most kids registered by Oct. 1 wins a $500 prize for their music department. The TSO opens Music Director José Luis Gomez’s inaugural season Sept. 22 and 24 with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring pianist Zhang Zuo. .
  • Once you’re approved, TEAMtix will send you notification about upcoming concerts and you can choose your seats online.

TSO Classics concerts are held downtown at Tucson Music Hall, 260 S. Church Ave. MasterWorks concerts are held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 7650 N. Paseo Del Norte in Oro Valley; and Catalina Foothills High School, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive.
