Sabino Canyon

The Sabino Canyon tram crosses over one of the dams fresh with snow and rain runoff in Sabino Creek on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013.

An 8-year-old girl was injured and taken to a hospital after falling from a tourist tram in Sabino Canyon on Saturday afternoon, according to a spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

“One of the (tram) carts may have been swaying. But what exactly led to her falling off, we couldn’t determine,” said Deputy Ryan Inglett on Monday.

Inglett said investigators “didn’t find anything that would lead to an arrest.”

Asked if the speed of the tram was a factor in the girl’s fall, he said, “We don’t know exactly how fast it was moving.”

Inglett said the girl was taken to a hospital, but he didn’t know her condition.

Don Ricketts, owner of Sabino Canyon Tours, which operates trams in the canyon northeast of Tucson, said the tram driver has been suspended.

The tram “was approaching what they call ‘Dead Man’s Hill’ and that’s when it happened,” Ricketts said. “We’re not sure about the speed. That’s under investigation.”

Trams are continuing to run in the canyon during the investigation, he said.

“This is the first injury (involving a tram) that we know of in 30 years,” Ricketts said.
