Deserts around Tucson β€” after putting on an early but sporadic wildflower show β€” are making up for that somewhat tepid start with a bonanza of colorful cactus blooms in late April.

Saguaro, cholla and prickly pear cacti are among the floral standouts.

Some species of wildflowers β€” including desert marigolds and globemallow β€” continue to brighten desert landscapes even though the peak of the flower bloom has passed.

One place to see a variety of cactus blooms is Sabino Canyon, with a visitor center at 5700 N. Sabino Canyon Road. Expect to pay a $5 per vehicle day-use fee at the canyon.

Saguaro National Park, with units east and west of Tucson, is known for its blooming saguaros and other types of cactus. The east unit is at 3693 S. Old Spanish Trail. The west unit is at 2700 N. Kinney Road. Park admission is $10 per vehicle.
