A number of fundraisers and adoption events are taking place over the next several weeks. One of them is a one-day mega-adoption fair called “Adopt Love Adopt Local,” put on by the Pima Alliance for Animal Welfare at the Tucson Expo Center. Above, dogs at the 2015 event got some company while awaiting adoption.

Love is Blind Wine Tasting Benefit for PAWSitively Cats No-Kill Shelter

Love may be blind, but what about your taste buds? See if you can identify six wine varieties while having fun and helping shelter cats from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 5 at CataVinos Wine Shoppe, 3063 N. Alvernon Way.

PAWSitively Cats No-Kill Shelter is home to over 100 special-needs cats, including blind kitties Maury and 18 year old Scrapper. Supporters who correctly identify the most wine varieties in the blind tasting will win raffle tickets.

The tasting will feature six fine wines and palate cleansers. The cost is $20, with $10 going to the cats. Ten dollars is tax-deductible. Donations of Friskies pâté-style canned food gratefully accepted.

PAWSitively CATS cares for more than 170 rescued animals in a cage-free environment. Three-legged cats, one-eyed cats, blind cats, cats with diabetes, FIV, or feline leukemia are among those being given a second chance. The shelter relies on public support to provide great care for homeless cats. Donations are tax deductible.

Calling all filmmakers

The deadline for submitting a film to be considered for the second annual Doggie Shorts: A Furry Film Festival is March 24. Doggie Shorts takes place at the Loft Cinema on April 8.

Last year, five locally produced films were selected to be shown for the sold-out event, which benefits Handi-Dogs Inc.. a Tucson-based nonprofit that has helped people with disabilities gain independence and self-esteem by assisting them to train their own dogs to be their service, therapy or well-mannered pet dogs.

Film contest guidelines:

  • Film must be under 4 minutes in length.
  • It must feature a dog or dogs as its subject.
  • Films may be any genre, as long as they are “PG-rated” in nature.
  • Finalists’ films will be shown during Doggie Shorts.
  • Winners selected by the audience will receive a cash prize of $250.
  • Submissions are due by March 2. Right now they can submit online through the Loft’s website: loftcinema.org/about/doggie-film-fest-application

Mark your calendar

It’s already time for the third annual Adopt Love Adopt Local, a one-day mega-adoption animal fair designed to help hundreds of Southern Arizona’s homeless pets find their forever homes. People are asked to leave their own animals at home.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 15 at the Tucson Expo Center, 3750 E. Irvington Road between Palo Verde Road and Alvernon Way.

In addition to Pima Animal Care Center and Humane Society of Southern Arizona, a variety of other local rescue groups and shelters will bring adoptable animals.

There will also be demonstrations, including dog units from local law enforcement agencies, in addition to vendors with pet-related services and merchandise.

In addition, the Animal Ministry from St. Mark’s UMC will provide blessings for the adopted animals, if the adopter wishes to take advantage of that.
