A man was killed and a woman seriously injured in an early morning shooting on Tucson's south side, officials said.

Shortly after 7 a.m., officers were called to the 200 block of West Illinois Street, near West Irvington Road and South Sixth Avenue, for reports of a shooting, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Officers found a man and woman with gunshot wounds lying in roadway and immediately began rendering first aid, until it was safe for Tucson firefighters to take the pair to the hospital, Dugan said.

The man died after arriving at the hospital and the woman is in life-threatening condition, but has been able to speak to detectives, Dugan said.

Homicide detectives took over the investigation and have learned that one of the victims lives in the neighborhood. The man and woman knew each other, but the nature of their relationship is currently unclear, as are the circumstances that led to the shooting, Dugan said.

Officers are looking for a male suspect who left the scene before police arrived, Dugan said.

Some witnesses have come forward, but TPD is asking anyone with information to call 911 or 88-CRIME, an anonymous tipster hotline.

Detectives are expected to be in the area collecting evidence for the next several hours.
