La histórica Chicago Music Store está vendiendo su también histórico edificio en el centro de Tucsón y se mudará a unos cuantos pasos, con la esperanza de volver al edificio una vez que sea renovado.
Se prevé que la venta del edificio a inversionistas locales concluya a finales de febrero, dijo el desarrollador Marcel Dabdoub, quien está comprando la propiedad junto con su socio de negocios Ron Schwabe y otros inversionistas de Nogales, Sonora.
“Es un gran edificio. Nos encanta su historia, su estilo arquitectónico y su ubicación”, dijo Dabdoub. “Entendemos el valor histórico y cultural que la comunidad de Tucsón le da a este edificio y lo tendremos presente durante la remodelación”.
Entre los posibles planes para el edificio están oficinas en el segundo piso y una mezcla de puntos de venta en la planta baja, el vestíbulo y el sótano, dijo Dabdoub.
“El edificio es parte de su legado. Nos gustaría que eso continuara”, dijo Dabdoub. Añadió que la estructura está en buenas condiciones y que el exterior no será alterado, excepto por posibles señales y entradas y salidas.
“Es un edificio singular y tenemos que hacerlo bien”, dijo. “A diferencia de otros edificios comerciales o administrativos, este tiene su propia personalidad”.
El edificio de más de 1,900 metros cuadrados, en 130 E. Congress St., albergaba grandes bocinas y consolas para mezclar en renta.
“La consola para mezclar ha sido remplazada por un iPad”, dijo el director general de las tiendas Chicago, David Fregonese, sobre por qué se mudarían a un lugar más chico. “Ya no necesitamos 2 metros cuadrados para poner una bocina”.
La nueva tienda más pequeña también estará en el centro de la ciudad, muy cerca de la actual, dijo. Espera hacer el anuncio de la nueva ubicación a principios del próximo año.
Cuando el edificio histórico sea remodelado, Chicago Music Store podría rentar uno de sus espacios para venta al público.
Chicago Music Store abrió en 1918 y tenía tres ubicaciones en el centro de la ciudad antes de mudarse al espacio actual en 1967. Hace tres años, una segunda Chicago Store se instaló en 5646 E. Speedway.
El edificio fue construido en 1903 por Los Angeles Furniture Store, según el Registro Nacional de Sitios Históricos. JC Penney lo arrendó de 1927 a 1957.
Después, Aaronson Brothers se mudó ahí y en 1967 fue vendido a los dueños de Chicago Music Store.
La arquitectura es estilo Palaciego Comercial, obra del arquitecto tucsonense David Holmes. Muchas de sus características originales se han conservado.

The historic Chicago Music Store is selling its equally historic building downtown and moving steps away in the hopes of returning to the building once it’s renovated.
The sale of the building to local investors is expected to be finalized at the end of February, said developer Marcel Dabdoub, who is buying the property along with business partner Ron Schwabe and investors from Nogales, Sonora.
“It is a great building. We loved its history, its architectural style and its location,” Dabdoub said. “We understand the historic and cultural value that the Tucson community places on this building and we’re going to be cognizant of that as we renovate.”
Possible plans for the building include office space upstairs and a mix of retail on the first floor, mezzanine and basement, Dabdoub said.
“The building is part of their legacy. We would like that to continue,” said Dabdoub.
Dabdoub said the building is structurally sound and the exterior won’t be altered, expect possibly for signage and entrances and exits.
“It’s a very unique building and we have to get it right,” he said. “Unlike other commercial or office buildings, this one has a lot of its own character.”
The 21,155 square-foot building, at 130 E. Congress, once housed massive speakers and mixing tables for rent.
“The mixing console has been replaced by an iPad,” Chicago stores’s CEO David Fregonese said of the reason for moving to smaller quarters. “We no longer need 20 square feet of floor space for speakers.”
The smaller store will still be downtown, within walking distance of the existing store, he said. He expects to make an announcement of the new location early next year.
Once the historic building is renovated, the Chicago Music Store could become a tenant in one of the retail spaces.
The Chicago Music Store opened in 1918 and had three locations in the downtown area before moving to the current space in 1967. A second Chicago Store, at 5646 E. Speedway, opened three years ago.
The building was constructed in 1903, according to the National Register of Historic Places, for the Los Angeles Furniture Store. JC Penney was the tenant from 1927 to 1957.
Aaronson Brothers moved in some time after that, then it was sold to the owners of the Chicago Music Store in 1967.
The architecture is Commercial Palatial Style, the work of Tucson architect David Holmes. Many of the original features have been preserved.
