Ballet Tucson is closing out the 2023-24 season with two company premieres by celebrated American choreographers, plus the long-awaited return of “Paquita.”
The spring concert, which kicks off March 22 and runs through March 24, will also feature the mainstage debut of the winning work from the company’s 2023 Footprints at the Fox choreographer’s showcase.
“This performance really is Ballet Tucson at its best,” said artistic director Margaret Mullin in a news release. “Our spring concert beautifully showcases the versatility and technical skill of our dancers.”
The company premieres come courtesy of Kiyon Ross and Paul Gibson.
Ross is bringing his third piece to Tucson, “Sum Stravinsky,” described as a charming ballet with a twist. The choreographer is known for his uplifting and energetic style.
Gibson’s neo-classical ballet “The Piano Dance” will feature a unique blend of athleticism, grace, humor and sensuality, highlighted by piano solos, Ballet Tucson said.
Concert goers will also get to experience “Paquita,” a historical piece of classical ballet with a lively Spanish flair, the news release said.
As part of its mission to cultivate and support the next generation of choreographers within its ranks, the company’s Corps de Ballet dancer Duncan Barlow’s 2023 Footprints at the Fox creation will take the mainstage for the first time, Mullin said.
Performances are at 7 p.m. on March 22 and 23, and at 2 p.m. on March 23 and 24 at Leo Rich Theater, 260 S. Church Ave.
Tickets are $30-50 through ticketmaster.com, the Tucson Convention Center box office or by calling 520-791-4101.
