El Presidio de San Agustin

El Presidio de San Agustín, foreground, in downtown Tucson dates back to 1776. By 1783, the city was a walled compound.

Presidio San Agustín receives plaque

Claudio Chini of Italy joined Mayor Jonathan Rothschild on Thursday for the unveiling of a bronze, bas-relief plaque commemorating the death of Father Eusebio Francisco Kino more than 300 years ago.

Chini, a distant relative of Kino’s, and the Cultural Association of Padre Eusebio F. Chini presented the plaque to recognize two places with ties to Kino, said Rick Collins, the exhibits curator at the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson. Kino was born in Segno, Italy, which the plaque depicts.

The new exhibit also includes artifacts with Father Kino connections and will be on display at the Presidio, 196 N. Court Ave., through September. More info:
