Desert Hills Lutheran Church, 2150 S. Camino Del Sol in Green Valley, will host the Rev. Mark Hanson at its annual World Mission Weekend, starting Saturday.

At a Saturday night forum and five worship services this weekend, Hanson will draw on his experiences as a pastor and presiding bishop for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, along with his time as president of the Lutheran World Foundation.

“We’re talking about what it means to be a Christian in a multi-faith world,” said Curt Jackson, the missions committee coordinator for the event.

Church services are at 3:30 and 5 p.m. Saturday and 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday. The free Saturday forum begins at 6:30 p.m.

Talk at St. Philip’s looks at prison issues

As part of St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church’s prison ministry, a Sunday talk will discuss “Prison Issues in America and Arizona.”

The free, 10:15 a.m. talk by Rebecca Fealk of “Read Between the Bars” will examine issues such as solitary confinement, inmates in prison for parole and probation violations and the role of the Christian church.

The prison ministry at the church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.,is based on words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew about visiting prisoners and caring for the sick, said Sue Agnew, the church’s director of communication.

Dead Sea Scrolls subject of JCC talk

The University of Arizona’s Arizona Center for Judaic Studies will explore the Dead Sea Scrolls Monday, through a talk given by University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor Sidnie White Crawford.

An expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls, Crawford will, according to press materials, discuss how the scrolls contribute to understanding of the Hebrew Bible.

The free talk is part of the center’s Shaol and Louis Pozez Memorial Lectureship Series and begins at 7 p.m. at the Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Road.
