Handi-Dogs Inc. is hosting an information session from 6 to 7 p.m. next Thursday, May 19, for people who might be interested in becoming foster families for dogs in the nonprofit’s new Rescue to Service program.
Handi-Dogs started the program earlier this year in collaboration with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, Pima Animal Care Center and Arizona Greyhound Rescue.
Dogs identified for potential service dog candidates live with foster families for at least two months in which the fosters begin the dog’s socialization and training.
Eventually, qualified dogs are matched with a person with a disability who adopts the dog and continues training with the goal of the dog being certified as a service dog.
As of last week, there were five dogs in the program. More foster families are needed for the program to take any more dogs. Learn more at handi-dogs.org/home/rescue-to-service
