A 24-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a man found inside a pickup truck hit by a train this week east of Tucson, authorities say.

The incident started about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday when deputies were called to a reported crash between a pickup truck and a train on East Marsh Station Road, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Friday in a news release.

Deputies found the truck with minor damage. However, the body of Vernie Garrison, 61, was found inside the truck’s cab.

His injuries were inconsistent with a minor crash and was later deemed a homicide, the release said.

In the meantime, the department received a report about a woman who’d been assaulted being found along Interstate 10 near the crash scene, the release said.

The woman, Kiara Tyler, was taken to the hospital.

During the initial investigation, a connection between Tyler and Garrison’s death was found, the release said.

Tyler was subsequently booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, the release said.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line.
