Two men have been convicted of first degree murder in the 2013 death of a homeless man in a wash on Tucson's west side, officials said.
Prosecutors with the Pima County Attorney's office argued that John Agee and Shane Blevins luredΒ Owen Mcnutt, 34, into the wash tunnels near North Granada Avenue and West St. Mary's Road, before Agee attacked him with a machete for nearly an hour, causing "bone-deep" wounds to the head, arms and back, according to a post on the County Attorney's Facebook page.
After Agee saw that Mcnutt wasn't dead, he grabbed a 36-pound rock and used it to smash the man's head, before he and Blevins wrapped the body in a tarp and hit it in a drainage tunnel, the post said.
Police discovered the body after rain water caused it to wash out of the tunnel and end up more than a mile away from the scene of Mcnutt's death. Agee later confessed to the crime, saying that Mcnutt "was tough and didn't want to die," the post said.
He was convicted of first degree murder on Jan. 6, and Blevins previously accepted a plea for the same charge. Blevins was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Agee is scheduled to be sentenced in Pima County Superior Court on Feb. 7.
