The driver of a fatal rollover was arrested Wednesday and is facing a charge of second-degree murder in a crash that killed a 16-year-old boy and injured several others southeast of Tucson.
Michael Anthony Rivera, 25, was booked into the Pima County jail, said Deputy Cody Gress, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
In addition to second-degree murder, Rivera also faces aggravated DUI, three counts of aggravated assault and three counts of felony endangerment, Gress said.
The car crash occurred Tuesday morning on South Houghton Road near the Pima County Fairgrounds, authorities said.
Investigators believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, said Gress.
Shortly before 8:30 a.m., deputies received a call about a single-vehicle collision involving five occupants in the area of South Houghton and East Andrada roads, said Gress.Β
The car was traveling northbound on Houghton, reportedly at a high rate of speed and passing vehicles in a no-passing zone, when the driver lost control of the car at a curve north of Andrada, Gress said.
The vehicle rolled multiple times and ended up in a desert area. The driver and the teen were ejected from the car. The driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and the teen was pronounced dead at the scene, Gress said.
All five occupants of the vehicle were identified as "young men," but the ages of three were not released.
The investigation is ongoing, Gress said.
