Atlantic County Freeholder-elect Ashley Bennett was a special guest on MSNBC Wednesday night following her victory over John Carman in Tuesday's general election.
Bennett, of Egg Harbor Township, decided to run for freeholder after Carman posted a controversial meme about the Women's March on Washington in January that asked whether the event would be "over in time for them to cook dinner."
The post drew national attention and was compounded by the fact that Carman did not apologize at the next freeholder meeting despite nearly two hours of public comments chided him for his conduct.
Carman apologized in a written statement a few days later.
MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey politician who shared a meme on Facebook during January's Women's March in Washington asking whether the protest would be "over in time for them to cook dinner" is eating his words.
Still, Carman's response to the controversy upset Bennett, and she said on MSNBC that she decided to run shortly after the meeting.
"I used vacation time to go to that meeting and I felt like it was a waste," Bennett said on MSNBC. "For all the people who felt their voice wasn't heard, I said 'I'll run and I will be your voice.'"
Bennett thanked her co-workers for switching shifts with her throughout the last year so she could campaign and said she hasn't spoken to Carman since the election. She's excited to begin her term as an Atlantic County freeholder in January.
The 32-year-old EHT resident is a graduate of Rutgers University and works as a psychiatric emergency screener in the crisis department at Cape Regional Hospital.
"I'm so humbled and so grateful to be able to run in the community where I was born and raised and went to high school," she said. "It means so much to me."
