Juneteenth Festival

Barbea Williams, right, will bring students from her dance troupe to perform at Saturday’s celebration.

The 47th annual Juneteenth Festival will be brought indoors Saturday at the historic Dunbar African American Cultural Center.

Festivities will be indoors in part because of Tucson’s triple-digit heat, said organizers.

An excessive heat warning has been issued through the weekend into next by the National Weather Service.

The cultural center is at 325 W. Second St., which is south of West Speedway and just east of North Main Avenue. The center’s home is the historic Dunbar School — the city’s first and only segregated school to educate African American students, said organizers in a news release.

The celebration that commemorates the end of slavery on June 19, 1865, begins at 11 a.m. with the raising of the newly purchased Juneteenth flag, organizers said. Festivities will continue to 4 p.m., and then begin again from 6 to 9 p.m.

Events include historical presentations and exhibits, music and dance, and vendors selling food, arts and crafts.
