Autumn color has reached its peak — finally — in parts of the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson.

The dazzling red hues of maple leaves and the brilliant gold of aspens are creating a vibrant color show in places such as Bear Wallow, at Milepost 22 on the Catalina Highway, after a somewhat tepid start earlier in the season.

But be aware: The autumn extravaganza is a short-lived wonder. Get to the mountains soon if you want to see it before colors begin to fade.
