Last week’s recipient: Roy Tullgren.
Nominated by: Victor Hightower.
Why: For his work with Gospel Rescue Mission, where he has been executive director for nearly 20 years and a board member for 12 years. He has also been with Big Brothers/Big Sisters for more than 40 years, Hightower wrote in his nomination letter. Under Tullgren, the rescue mission has transformed into the largest homeless shelter in Tucson, soon to have more than 400 beds and serving nearly a half-million meals each year, Hightower wrote. “I have known few people who so embody grace, respect, kindness, gentleness, encouragement, understanding, and empathy. A leader by example, Roy encourages employees to be honest and above reproach in our dealings with others; and to nurture our guests by responding to their needs with care, compassion, and unconditional love,” Hightower wrote. “He is a humble and faithful leader who teaches openness and honesty in all relationships.” Tullgren is committed to improving the lives of people who have the least, Hightower wrote. “His impact on the men, women and children who come to the mission each day has helped change lives, restore families, and heal hearts.”
