Twenty-nine bighorn sheep were released into the Catalina Mountains early Monday.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department has been working to re-establish bighorns in the range north of Tucson.

Bighorn sheep were reintroduced to the area in 2013 and 2014 in an attempt to replace sheep that disappeared in the 1990s.

There were 35 of the collared animals known to be living in the range north of Tucson before today's release of animals that were captured in the Yuma area and brought to Tucson.

At least four sheep have died recently from pneumonia. Officials have said the sheep released today have had prior exposure to pneumonia.
