Traffic detectives are investigating a Tuesday night incident, after a train conductor discovered body parts on the tracks in Vail, authorities said.

At about 9:30 a.m., an Amtrak conductor traveling westbound near Colossal Cave Road thought he saw an animal on the tracks and hit his emergency brakes, said Deputy Cody Gress, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Once the conductor got out of the train, he noticed that they were human remains and called authorities, Gress said.

Once the sheriff's department arrived at the scene, they noticed that the body parts were spread out in an eastbound direction, indicating that the person was probably hit by an earlier train traveling in the other direction, Gress said.

The body parts have been turned over to the Pima County Medical Examiner's Office for identification.
