Stormy weather Saturday is expected to bring rain to the Tucson valley and snow to higher elevations.

It could be a snowy Southern Arizona Christmas for anyone living in the mountains above 7,000 feet.

The National Weather Service in Tucson said stormy weather will bring winds and rain to much of Southern Arizona on Saturday and that some mountain areas could see heavy snowfall. Six to 9 inches of snow are forecast for the higher elevations.

Rain is more likely for the Tucson metro area — a 60 percent chance Saturday night — but snow levels are expected to drop to about 4,000 feet overnight into Sunday. The weather service said, though, by then most of the precipitation will have already faded out in the area.

Tucson residents could wake up Christmas morning to snow blanketing higher levels of the Santa Catalina Mountains, the weather service said in its Thursday forecast discussion.

High temperatures Saturday and Sunday will make it hard for any snow to fall and stick in the valley, with highs expected in the 60s Saturday and mid-50s Sunday.

Lows each night will drop into the 30s.
