Tucson police officers fatally shot a man armed with a long gun who did not comply with their commands to put his hands up during a SWAT situation, the department said.
The Tucson Police Department gave the following account in a news release early Saturday morning:
Police were called to 350 N. Silverbell Road, on the city's west side near St. Mary's Hospital, about 8:15 Friday night for reports that a man began shooting while arguing with a woman. Neighbors called 911 to report hearing several gunshots.
The woman was able to get away uninjured from the domestic violence suspect, and he went back into the home. Officers spoke with the woman and evacuated several nearby homes.
Special Weapons and Tactical Team members arrived and hostage negotiators were called, but before police could establish communication with the man, he came out of the home armed with the gun.Β
Officers identified themselves but he ignored their orders to put his hands up and they shot him, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name and age have not yet been released by police.Β
The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team will investigate the shooting, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department taking the lead role.Β
